Superbike stars fly home for Adelaide Awards
Superbike stars Jonathan Rea and Eugene Laverty will both make a special flying visit back home in January to attend the Adelaide Motorbike Awards at the Ramada Plaza Hotel in Belfast.
Rea, who finished third in this year’s World Superbike Championship, will take a short break from pre-season testing in Spain to come to the annual event. Laverty will jet in especially from his home in Monaco for the biggest night in the Irish motorcycling calendar.
January is set to be a busy month for 27-year-old Rea who has two tests with his new factory Kawasaki team, after parting with Honda at the end of this season. He said:
“I am really excited that my testing schedule allows me to attend the premier motorcycle awards in Ireland. I can’t wait for my first test with my new team at Motorland, Aragon in Spain, and am delighted to be able to squeeze in a trip to Northern Ireland before flying back for a second test at Herez.”
“It’s a going to be busy start to an exciting New Year but I always enjoy coming home to celebrate all the racing talent in the country, catch up with friends and say a big thank you to the fans who give me incredible support all season.”
It’s all change for Eugene Laverty in 2015. He has secured the biggest opportunity of his career as he moves from the World Superbike Championship into MotoGP. With a January testing ban for the sports’ premier class he says he can’t wait to make the trip to Belfast.
“I was thrilled to be named the Motorcyclist of the Year last January – and although I was shocked to receive the famous Joey Dunlop trophy in Monaco, I was gutted not to be able to pick it up on the big night at home. I am definitely not missing the event this time – it’s the best night of the year” said the 28 year old from Toomebridge.
Laverty is also excited about the start of a new challenge. He has waited patiently for the right opportunity to come along and says he jumped at the offer of a two year deal with the Spanish Aspar Honda team: “There are not that many teams who would give you a two-year contract as a rookie but I pushed hard for it because I want to have a proper go at this”.
In all more than a dozen awards, decided by a public vote and expert panel of judges chaired by former British Champion Adrian Coates, will be presented at the Adelaide Motorbike Awards on January 23rd. Details of voting will be released after the season reaches an exciting conclusion with the Macau Grand Prix.
